At Goodwin Cowley, we believe that everyone deserves to feel safe, both physically and psychologically. A recent case, concluded symbolically on World Mental Health Day, powerfully reaffirms the legal system's role in protecting individuals from non-physical harm.

The Case: A Barrier to Healing

We were instructed by a resilient individual who had been subjected to prolonged emotional and psychological abuse by a former partner. The impact was severe, culminating in a mental breakdown. Crucially, our client’s path to recovery was being blocked by ongoing torment and intimidation, making legal intervention not just advisable, but essential for her well-being.

The Challenge: Upholding Principles Under Pressure

The process was not without its challenges. We encountered inappropriate attempts at settlement and escalating pressure from the respondent. Our team remained steadfast, focusing on our client's safety and psychological welfare. We resisted these tactics, understanding that a swift and secure outcome was critical to her healing process.

The Outcome: Safety and Recognition Secured

Our advocacy resulted in the successful securing of both a non-molestation order and an occupation order for our client. These orders provide integral, practical protection for her and significantly reduce any further risk of harm to her children.

The Judge, in delivering the judgment, commended the high standards of representation, acknowledging the robust and principled approach taken.

Perhaps the most significant aspect of this outcome was its timing and its message. The orders were pronounced on Friday, 10th October 2025 – World Mental Health Day. This underscores a vital legal principle: the courts are determined to extend protection to those who have suffered emotional harm, even where no physical injuries are visible. The law recognises that psychological harm is real, debilitating, and worthy of protection.

A Message of Hope and Support

This case is more than a legal victory; it is a milestone for survivors of non-physical abuse. It sends a clear message that you do not have to have visible bruises to deserve safety, peace, and the space to heal.

If you or someone you know is experiencing similar forms of emotional or psychological harm, please know that support and protection are available. The law can be a powerful tool for reclaiming your mental well-being and security.

At Goodwin Cowley, we are committed to providing the expert, compassionate legal guidance needed to navigate these challenging circumstances and secure the safety you deserve.
